South Korean Group Begins Mandatory Service

On Tuesday, December 13, 2022, BTS member Jin, real name Kim Seok-jin, officially enlisted in the South Korean military. The 30-year-old artist began his mandatory service as an active-duty soldier in the Army, making him the first member of the world-renowned K-pop group to serve.

BigHit Music, the band's record label, released a statement on June 11, 2024, confirming Jin's impending military discharge. The label requested fans' support and well wishes for the artist during his service.

As the eldest member of BTS, Jin was the first to reach the mandatory enlistment age under South Korea's Military Service Act. The country requires all able-bodied men between the ages of 18 and 28 to serve for approximately 18 to 21 months.
